Whilst on the Costa de la Luz, you should take the opportunity to visit one of the many bodegas in the area. All sherry is produced in this so-called “sherry triangle”, the region between Jerez, El Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlucar de Barrameda. Although vines have been cultivated in this area since Phoenician times, and sherry first started to be exported in the 15th century, it wasn’t until the early 18th century that British merchants arrived in the area, and the serious business of exporting sherry started. In fact the British influence is still much in evidence, as many of the companies involved in the sherry industry have names of British origin, ie Williams and Humbert, Croft, John Harvey, Osborne.
