Chiclana de la Frontera is located about 6km inland from the stunning sandy beach of Playa La Barrosa, and about 25km south of Cadiz, to which it has been linked throughout its history. The discovery of America was very important for the development of this whole area, as local merchants benefitted from the trade with the new colonies. This is obviously reflected in the number of fine churches and monuments dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, its golden age.
Chiclana is surrounded by attractive pine groves, marshes, and gently rolling countryside. Today it is a town of some 60,000 people, and is well served with shops, restaurants and bars. It is an important wine growing area, especially fino varieties (dry sherry) that perfectly complement the locally caught fish and seafood, and the local bodegas will be happy to organize a visit.
Chiclana’s most ancient monument lies on the Isla de Sancti Petri, which overlooks one of the most beautiful beaches of the Costa de la Luz, La Barrosa. This was the site of the Phoenician temple to Melkaart. Later the Romans built their famous temple dedicated to Hercules on this same spot.
Today the isolated and abandoned fishing village of Sancti Petri is worth a visit. Here you will find the marina and the Club Nautico, outside of which the local fishermen sell their catch. One can also hire near the little harbour. This part of the beach is served by some popular beach bars, and is a favoured spot for windsurfers.
The early part of the 19th century saw Chiclana’s popularity as a holiday destination rise, as the wealthy and fashionable flocked to the spas of Fuente Amarga, and Braque.

The major tourist development of Chiclana is very recent, however, and has avoided the high-rise developments seen in many other areas. The driving force was the luxury hotels and residential developments built around the extensive beach of La Barrosa, especially close to Novo Sancti Petri. This has become one of the most important beach and golf sites in the south of Spain.

This resort area offers the tourist excellent sporting facilities, as well as luxury hotels, shops, great bars and restaurants.
